Christmas is nearly upon us… yep I’ve said it! And the weather, even down here, has turned cold. This One Pot Slow Cooked Ham in a Dairyfree, Creamy Sage Sauce is the perfect dinner to warm everyone up on a cold winters day. Peachicks are big fans of ham joints, you know the big ones that are roasted, basted & glazed for the Christmas celebrations! Well they are actually a really lovely, cheap and fuss free way to feed the family the whole year through. Its also quite nice to arrive home from work and have food already sorted so happily this dish works as well in a casserole dish on the hob (1hour) or in a slow cooker left to its own devices for the day on low! AND bonus – not only does it all cook in one pot but this is a very cheap family dinner, working out at about £1.50 each.
On the hob this will cook in an hour and can be left to its own devices, with an occasional lift of the lid to check there is still water there. After 45mins the whole thing is ready to eat but I like to take out all the veggies and just crisp them in the oven for 20mins while I finish the sauce. The sauce itself is quite watery but as you eat it bits of the potatoes fall off so that by the time you get to your last mouthful, you have a lovely puddle of thick gravy to scoop up with a spoon or dunk some bread in!
This is a basic recipe that feeds the five of us, chunks of pumpkin, squash, swede or onions also work really nicely. You could also add a can of beans to bulk it out a bit and made it go further!
- 750 g Unsmoked Gammon Joint
- 1 medium Apple
- 4 Large Potatoes
- 2 Large Carrots
- 1 Medium Tomato
- 1 tbsp Garlic Powder
- 1 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar
- 1 tsp Paprika
- water Enough to come halfway up the side of the ham joint.
- 6 small corn on the cob
- 200 ml Milk or Dairyfree Alternative we use Koko Dairyfree - coconut milk drink
- 8 small Fresh Sage Leaves (or pinch of dried)
Boil a kettle of water and cut up all the veg into large chunks. Quarter the Apple & tomato and remove the ham from all its packaging. Place the Ham in a large casserole pot, sprinkle over the garlic powder & Paprika before adding enough boiling water to cover half the ham. Arrange the apples quarters, tomatoes & vegetables chunks around the sides of the ham, cover and leave on a low to medium heat for 30mins.
After 30mins place the corn on the cob over the top of the ham and other vegetables. Leave for another 15mins. At this point the potatoes should be nice and soft and you can either serve the whole thing now or remove the potatoes and roast for a further 20mins on 200C just to crisp them up a bit while you finish the sauce.
Add 200ml of Koko Dairyfree or other dairyfree milk to the pan with the sage leaves and leave on a medium to high heat for 15mins until it has reduced by half.
Pile the veggies in a bowl, add some ham slices and pour over the sauce. Enjoy!
Place the ham in the slow cooker, arrange the vegetables around it and sprinkle the spices and sage leaves over the top. Pour over the water and dairyfree milk and leave on low for the day. You can remove the potatoes for crisping in the oven when you get in if you want or just slice up the ham and pile the veg into a big bowl, pour over the sauce and enjoy!
