Vegan Chocolate Banana Bread (Dairy Free, Gluten Free & Vegan)
Vegan Chocolate Banana Bread, a delicious, nutritious lunchbox staple in this house. Full of crunchy seeds, soft dried fruits and chunks of dark chocolate, topped with slices of banana. This quick & easy one bowl recipe keeps well in an airtight tin and can be frozen in slices. Dairy Free, Nut Free and can be made Gluten Free by using a suitable flour.
There is always a loaf of this Vegan Chocolate Banana Bread in our house, either fresh in a tin or as pre wrapped slices in the freezer. It is Millie’s favourite no matter what time of day. She’d eat this (and has done) for Breakfast, Lunch as well as before & after gymnastics. Her job is to mash the banana and measure out the cocoa powder. Needless to say there is a lot more cocoa in her version plus a good handful of cocoa nibs for good measure!
And on the off chance there is actually any left and it happens to go stale; a few seconds in a microwave plus a thick layer of your favourite chocolate hazelnut spread and you have yourself a rather delicious & decadent afternoon treat!
Sadly for me the banana element of this means that I can’t actually eat it. Part of the delights of my pollen & latex allergies! I have to say I am very jealous. It always smells incredible while its cooking!
Can I freeze Vegan Chocolate Banana Bread?
Perfect for stocking up the freezer stash, this egg free Chocolate Banana Bread truly is a lifesaver when it comes to allergy friendly packed lunches. I slice it, wrap in greaseproof paper and store in a box in the freezer. Then all The Peas need to do is grab a slice in the morning and pop it in their lunchbox.
Come lunchtime, its nicely defrosted. And best of all its as fresh as when it went in. The roasted banana on top goes a bit squishy – although Millie says thats the best bit!
Optional ingredients to add to your Vegan Banana Bread.
This Vegan Chocolate Banana Bread is a great way to use up really ripe bananas, in fact the more black and squishy they are, the better! Bananas get sweeter, the riper they are which means that you can reduce the amount of sugar you use. You could add maple syrup or honey, if not vegan, and coconut sugar would give a really nice fudgy taste.
I like to use seeds to add crunch to this banana bread so that The Peas can take it to school for packed lunches. But it would be amazing with a handful of chopped nuts. Hazelnuts, pecans or brazil nuts would be really lovely, both mixed into the batter and scattered over the top alongside the banana.
For a Christmassy version you could add a little ground ginger and swap out the dried fruit & seeds for dried cranberries, glace cherries and pistachios.
The banana slices on top are completely optional but I have it on good authority they are absolutely necessary. But not as necessary as the chocolate chunks inside (obviously!) – I use waitrose cooks ingredients, dark chocolate chunks but Moo Free Chocolate Drops or chopped dairy free chocolate would work just as well.

Its been a while since I posted a new recipe, and I’ve love to say this is me getting back to regular blogging but lets not get too excited! Mind you I have to say its been nice to take a break and having spent the last few weeks in the house with pnuemonia* I’ve had a little bit of time to think about new recipes for Christmas.
*I do not recommend pnuemonia – it sucks. I can honestly say I have never been so tired in my life (and I’ve had real flu AND have 3 kids that are allergic to sleep – LOL!).
Most of our week is taken up with being taxi taking The Peas to gymnastics training. Millie is learning a new hoop routine for a competition and Elodie is really enjoying the extra demands of being in the development squad. So as you can imagine this recipe is total lifesaver at the moment!!

Vegan Chocolate Banana Bread Recipe
Vegan Chocolate Banana Bread
Basic Banana Bread Ingredients
- 1 Ripe Banana
- 100 ml Vegetable Oil (Sunflower, Canola, Vegetable)
- 75 g Granulated Sugar
- 25 g Cocoa Powder
- 300 g self raising flour
- 50 g Rolled Oats
- 200 ml Strong Coffee or Espresso
- 50 g Dark Chocolate Chips or Chunks
- 5 tbsp Mixed Seeds**
- 75 g Dried Fruit
- 1 Sliced Banana or handful of banana chips
- Preheat the oven to 180C and grease or line a loaf tin.
- In a small bowl, mash a ripe banana until smooth and scrape into a large mixing bowl.
- To the mixing bowl add the cocoa powder, vegetable (or melted coconut) oil and sugar. Stir together until smooth and combined.
- Fold in the flour, oats and any or all of the optional ingredients while slowly stirring in the coffee.
- Once the flour is completely folded in, pour into a loaf tin and top with the banana slices, banana chips or pearl sugar.
- Bake on a middle shelf for 45mins or until a skewer comes out clean. Tip out of the loaf tin and leave to cool.
- If you are freezing for lunches through the week, then slice once cool and wrap each individual slice in greaseproof paper or cling film. It will however keep for around a week as a whole loaf in an airtight tin.
